Frequencies and Symbols

Bilawal is a Raga employing all pure notes. But in ascending cross-loop from Sixth or Dhaiwat, it sometimes touches flat Seventh or Komal Nishad and the Raga is then called Alhaiya Bilawal. Such is the aesthetic appeal of Komal Nishad that rarely can an artiste keep away from it; hence Alhaiya Bilawal has come to be recognized as the popular form of Bilawal. It was also known earlier as Belawal, Bilawali and Belawali. Shuddha Bilawal is the form employing all pure notes. Yet, the Raga is not simple employing shadow or trace notes (Kana or Sparsha) around Gandhar (Third) or Nishad (Sixth).
